But it’s often hard to get a true fix on how the University of Oxford, for example, truly compares with Harvard Business School because those institutions are so dramatically different from each other.When the Financial Times and The Economist produce â€Å"global† rankings, they often favor non-U.S. schools because their methodologies are meant to encourage and support advertising revenue from European and Asian schools which are made to look far more competitive with U.S. institutions than they actually are.Today’s U.S. News ranking of the best global universities , while still flawed, may offer a better clue as to how higher education players in the world really stack up against each other. Overall, of the top 25 universities, only six are outside the U.S.: No. 5 Oxford, No. 7 Cambridge, No. 17 Imperial College London, No. 20 University of Toronto, and No. 25 Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich. The top four universities are all in the U.S.: Harvard, MIT, Stanford, and UC-Berkeley.A RANKING LARGELY BASED ON ACADEMIC RESEARCH IN ECONOMICS AND BUSINESSIn releasing what is U.S. News’ fourth global university ranking, the publication also puts out more specific subject rankings, including one for economics and business. The methodology only takes into account academic research, which can, in fact, run counter to ithe quality of the student experience. That’s because institutions that focus so exclusively on research often do so at the expense of classroom teaching, the accessibility of faculty to students, and the co-cu rricular activities that are so essential to personal development and to gaining a network of support well beyond graduation.Still, it’s fascinating to see what schools do best when it comes to their research chops in economics and business, a broader category than business alone. According to U.S. News, the top universities in the world for economics and business are Harvard University, MIT, the University of Pennsylvania, Stanford University, and UC-Berkeley. The only non-U.S. school to make the top ten is the London School of Economics, ranked ninth behind the top five and No. 6 University of Chicago, No. 7 Columbia University, No. 8 New York University. The University of Michigan lands in the tenth spot.There are a lot of surprises up and down the list, however. When it comes to economics and business, for example, Oxford, at a rank of 14th, ranks significantly better than its rival Cambridge at 23rd. Arizona State University and Michigan State University both merit Top 2 5 status, coming in at 24th and 25th, respectively. The Netherlands can boast two schools on the Top 25, with Erasmus University in Rotterdam in 15th place and Tilburg University in 18th.WITHOUT A B-SCHOOL, PRINCETON RANKS 16TH ON THE BASIS OF ITS ECONOMICS FACULTYLondon Business School, generally regarded as one of the two best European business schools with INSEAD, shows up at a rank of 20th, though it places 438th on the overall global list. INSEAD, its neck-and-neck rival as the top European business school, has a rank of 33rd and is 584th on the bigger global ranking. Princeton University, one of two Ivy League institutions without a business school, comes in at a rank of 16th on the basis of its strong economics department. The University of Minnesota has a truly impressive showing, ranking 22nd in econ and business, well above many other resource-rich universities.These subject-specific rankings – which are not of academic majors, departments or specific schools at uni versities, such as business schools or medical schools – are based on academic research performance in a given subject. U.S. News explains that is uses â€Å"various bibliometric measures, including publications and citations, as well as indicators for global and regional reputation in each specific subject† to come up with its ranking. The citation data comes from the Web of Science, which tracks over 12,000 influential scholarly journals worldwide, for the five-year period from 2010-2014. U.S. News found only 57 universities with faculty that have published 500 or more papers on economics and business in these journals and 211 with 250 or more papers. Overall, the magazine ranks 200 universities on these two subjects.Besides the obvious flaw of creating a ranking centered mostly on research, the methodology has one other important disadvantage. It favors large universities that employ lots of faculty over smaller institutions with fewer professors. Obviously, the mor e faculty you have pumping out articles that appear in scholarly journals the better off you’ll appear on this list. So it’s possible that the faculty of smaller colleges could in some cases be more productive than some of the higher-ranked institutions on the U.S. News list.UNDERLYING INDEX SCORES ARE MORE REVEALING THAN THE ACTUAL NUMERICAL RANKSThere is another annual ranking of business school research but it is put together by a single school—the University of Texas-Dallas—which tends to rank suspiciously high on that list to suggest that the journals were cherry picked to put Dallas in such a favorable light. One advantage that ranking has, however, is that you can adjust the ranking for the size of the faculty. The U.S. News alternative at least doesnt carry with it the possibility that someone stacked the odds in ones favor.Yet, when it comes to mainly academic research, far more revealing than a school’s numerical rank may well be its unde rlying index score, which shows exactly how far ahead or behind a school might be on the list. Harvard’s number one spot is shockingly dominant compared to the number two school, MIT, which has an index score of 90.3, some 9.7 points below Harvard. The London School of Economics, the only non-U.S. school to make the economics and business Top 10 list in ninth place, has an index school of 78.8, a full 21.2 points behind Harvard. The higher the overall global rank of a university, for example, the more likely it is that business and economics students can gain greater exposure to other core disciplines related to business whether in health, the environment, law or other subjects. For many years, business schools were often isolated standalone entities on their university campuses. That is no longer true as an increasing number of business school deans break through and create opportunities for their students and others to take advantage of the wider university offerings. Schools that are not part of those ne tworks are at a significant disadvantage in the future.Ultimately, what this research-centric ranking may show is the amount of resources behind each of the brands on this global list. Only schools with big budgets can afford to play the academic research game at these high levels. But that often means these same schools have money for lots of other things that impact the quality of a students experience in a given program. Alfred Hitchcock’s movie, Vertigo has captivated audiences since its release in 1958. The movie follows detective Scotty who realizes he has severe acrophobia and experiences terrifying vertigo when he is unable to catch a fellow colleague as he falls off the roof of a building while pursuing a criminal. Scotty quits the police force and is hired by an old college friend to investigate the strange activities of his wife, Madeline, all the while becoming dangerously obsessed with her. This storyline has twists and turns that it seems only Hitchcock would be able to create in the almost perfect mystery. Scotty is the ideal representation of the frustrated male of the 1950’s, and Madeline, Judy, and Midge are gre at representations for the women. Unless the viewer is actively looking for the subtle clues projected by Hitchcock’s characters, this theme can easily be lost in one of the greatest cinematic mysteries ever created. The aspect of the fight for power between the genders first makes its appearance with two of the movie’s main characters, Scotty and his ex-fiancà © Midge. In one of the very first scenes the characters are at Midge’s apartment and the subtle fight for dominance between males and females is evident. First, her apartment is filled with her artwork and she is working diligently on her next project. The window in her apartment practically takes up an entire wall, and outside it is a spectacular view of the city. It gives the feeling that this woman is reigning over the city, and can reach out and take anything she wants from it; an ideal that woman wanted to have during this time. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye, the first person narration is critical in helping the reader to know and understand the main character, Holden Caulfield. Holden, in his narration, relates a flashback of a significant period of his life, three days and nights on his own in New York City. Through his narration, Holden discloses to the reader his innermost thoughts and feelings. He thus provides the reader not only with information of what occurred, but also how he felt about what happened. Holden’s thoughts and ideas reveal many of his character traits. One late Saturday night, four days before the beginning of school vacation, Holden is alone, bored and restless, wondering what to do. He decides to leave Pencey, his school, at once and travels to New York by train. He decides that, once in New York, he will stay in a cheap motel until Wednesday, when he is to return home. His plan shows the reader how very impetuous he is and how he acts on a whim. He is unrealistic, thinking that he has a foolproof plan, even though the extent of his plans are to â€Å"take a room in a hotel, and just take it easy till Wednesday.†Holden’s excessive thoughts on death are not typical of most adolescents. His near obsession with death might come from having experienced two deaths in his early life. He constantly dwells on Allie, his brother’s, death. From Holden’s thoughts, it is obvious that he loves and misses Allie. In order to hold on to his brothe r and to minimize the pain of his loss, Holden brings Allie’s baseball mitt along with him where ever he goes. The mitt has additional meaning and significance for Holden because Allie had written poetry, which Holden reads, on the baseball mitt. Holden’s preoccupation with death can be seen in his contemplation of a dead classmate, James Castle. It tells the reader something about Holden that he lends his turtleneck sweater to this classmate, with whom he is not at all close. Holden’s feelings about people reveal more of his positive traits. He constantly calls people phonies, even his brother, D.B., who † has sold out to Hollywood.† Although insulting, his seemingly negative feelings show that Holden is a thinking and analyzing, outspoken individual who values honesty and sincerity. He is unimpressed with people who try to look good in other’s eyes. Therefore, since it is obvious that Holden is bright, the reason for his flunking out of school would seem to be from a lack of interest. Holden has strong feelings of love towards children as evidenced through his caring for Phoebe, his little sister. He is protective of her, erasing bad words from the walls in her school and in a museum, in order that she not learn from the graffiti. His fondness for children can be inferred when he tells her that, at some time in the future, he wants to be the only grown-up with â€Å"all these little kids playing some game in this big field of rye and all.† He’ll stand on the edge of a cliff and catch anybody who starts to fall off the edge of the cliff. He got this image from his misinterpretation of a line from the Robert Burns poem, † if a body catch a body comin’ through the rye.†When situations are described, in person or in a book, they are influenced by the one who describes them, and by his or her perceptions and experiences. Through Holden’s expressions of his thoughts and feelings, the reader sees a youth, sensitive to his surroundi ngs, who chooses to deal with life in unique ways. Holden is candid, spontaneous, analytical, thoughtful, and sensitive, as evidenced by his narration. Like most adolescents, feelings about people and relationships are often on his mind. Sioux City Crash INTRODUCTION Aircraft accidents can be a tragic thing. Some people may argue that all are avoidable. But when considering this statement, one must always remember there is an element that is in all accidents. Humans. Either through design, being flown by, or maintained by, humans are in all aspects of flying. As long as humans are in 100% control of an airplane there will be accidents. However, a good side to an accident is it is thoroughly researched by the NTSB. (National transportation and safety board). From a majority of those accidents, something can benefit aviation in general. Aviation can be benefited through design, training, or in this situation, re-evaluating current limitations to a safer level. The focus of my project is going to be on a particular accident that took place on July 19, 1989 when a McDonnell Douglas DC-10-10 aircraft crashed in Sioux City, Iowa. This particular type of aircraft, at the time of the accident, had been in production for about 18 years. The United Airlines jet was bound for Chicago when the tail-mounted engine broke apart and severed the aircrafts main hydraulic lines. Without hydraulics the aircraft wouldnt be able to maneuver. It would also have trouble slowing down for landing. This meant trouble for United Airlines flight 232 with 285 passengers and 11 crew- members on board. Statement of the Problem: A potential problem of complete hydraulic failure if the tail-mounted engine breaks apart. PAGE 1 Hypothesis Statement: My theory is this all could have been avoided. The actions taken after the accident could have been incorporated in the initial design of the aircraft. RESULTS On July 19,1989 a United Airlines DC-10-10 passenger plane took off Stapleton International in Denver Colorado. The plane was scheduled to make a quick stop in Chicago, Illinois and then continue on to Philadelphia, PA. After an uneventful hour of flight a loud thump was heard, followed by a shaking of the aircraft. The flight crew observed the tail-mounted engine had failed. (SEE FIGURE 3) While performing an engine shutdown procedure, the crew noticed that they didnt have any hydraulic pressure. They also noticed that the fluid level was at zero. The co-pilot tried to maneuver the airplane with no success. The crew then radioed to the air traffic controller that they needed emergency assistance to the nearest airport. Sioux City, Iowa was found to be the almost straight-ahead. The captain then briefed the passengers of the up-coming trials. It just so happen that there was a United Airlines DC-10 pilot instructor sitting in first class. He asked if he could be of any assistance and the captain asked him to see if there was any damage that the could see. The instructor found that the flight controls on the wings werent moving and that the horizontal stabilizer had damage to the left and right side. The horizontal stabilizer is the part of the aircraft that controls elevation and what is known as yaw. (Right and left turning) Now that they definitely knew they didnt have any flight controls the crew began to discuss what ways the aircraft could be maneuvered. PAGE 2 The instructor pilot recommended the use of engine power to maneuver the airplane. The idea seemed to work and being that all other options were few, the crew adopted this plan of action. When flight 232 was about eight miles from the airport they lowered the landing gear. To their dismay they learned from the air traffic controller that they were lined up on a runway that was closed for repairs. The captain elected to stay on course because of the difficulty to turn the airplane. The air traffic controller said that the runway was 3000 feet shorter but they shouldnt have any trouble landing due to the repairs. During the final approach the flight crew felt they were on course to make the landing. However they were a little faster than normal, due to not being able to lower the proper flight controls known as the flaps and slats. These two controls allow the airplane to fly at a lower speed. The little organism was exposed to intense UV radiation (UV-C 254 nm), under which most organisms such as E. Coli would not survive, yet 80% Halobacterium survived and went on proliferating. Other experiments included exposing the bacterium to a vacuum environment simulating the vacuum of space. As water evaporated and salt crystals were left behind, the bacterium was trapped inside the crystals in a semi-dormant state.
